Evaluation and CGPA system
Evaluation of students' progress is a continuous process. Each SCMLD programme is of 75+ credits each. Those who complete both the programmes (PGPEL & APEL) will have a total of 150+ credits. The unique co-curricular activities, team learning, extempore and viva-voce, group discussions, and the social & community work are all included in the credit schemes. Every activity and behavior is evaluated at SCMLD.
A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system is applied to finally grade the students.
Continuous assessment :
The evaluation system is a dynamic one. It is designed to make one aware as to where one stands in terms of one's understanding of a subject(s) / topic(s) and how well one plans and executes projects, events and assignments. One credit , two credit and three credit courses will have 12 , 24 and 36 hours of classroom teaching respectively and 3 hours will be spent in collaborative learning assignments and presentations.
One credit subject carries 50 marks. Two and three credit subjects carry 100 and 150 marks respectively.
15% of the marks are for pre-end term GD and another 15% are for extempore team presentations & viva-voce by the faculty teaching the subject and practicing professionals not teaching the subject, but within the scope of the syllabus. 30% marks will be through continuous evaluation by way of collaborative learning & team extempore and quizzing. 40% marks will be for tutorials / case study analysis / problem solving / situation analysis / assignments / essays as appropriate at the end of the trimester.
Enhanced reading : Additionally there will be an essay type exam which will evaluate the extra reading / learning efforts of students. This test will be on prescribed readings - journals, current affairs, periodicals, etc. - related to that subject but outside the sylabus. This score can be added to the total of scores earned by the student in all the preceding tests and viva voce on the subject provided he/she has scored 60% or above in total in that subject. This is a bonus to improve the GPA / CGPA of the student who works hard and earns 60% and above. This enhanced reading exam carries 20% marks.
Failure in exams : If a student fails in a subject, there is no re-examination as a matter of routine. However a faculty committee may consider re-exam on a case to case basis looking at the student's attendance records, punctuality, co-curriculars, conduct and behaviour etc. If decided to hold, it will be for the 40% end term element only - tutorials / case study analysis / problem solving / situation analysis / assignments / essays, as appropriate subject to the faculty committee's recommendation. This is to make the students alert, attentive and active in learning day to day. This is also to emphasize that work / efforts should not be postponed. 'Here and now' approach is very important to avoid stress and to be competitive. The habit of doing right excellently well first time itself, needs to be promoted. One must not postpone things. Re-exam, if permitted is subject to conditions already stated earlier elsewhere in this prospectus. End-term exam if held will be for 100% marks covering the portions already covered in continuos evaluation. To ensure all students to put in efforts and work together as a team for collaborative team extempore, the least score out of end-term exam and the continuos evaluation shall be the final score.
Self evaluation
The evaluation system within the above frame work is implemented as follows:
For one credit subject every fourth session will have an extempore test of 15% marks. In the same session after the test, the teacher and the class together are to discuss the questions and a benchmark answer should appear on the board. This acts as instant feedback to each student as to where he / she stands. This process is repeated after the 8th session as well. With this the 30% will be over for one credit course.
For the next 40%, test is conducted immediately on completion of the course. This is preceded by Team Learning covering the entire syllabus and GD & viva-voce by the panel of faculty & practitioners. This covers the remaining 30%. This is the process followed for courses with more than one credit also, the difference being only the number of tests and marks .
The student is responsible for learning and the institution is responsible for facilitating the learning. There is no time to waste by either.
A handbook of exam system will be provided to students on commencement of the course. There are bonus marks for attendance, good conduct and minus marks for absence and misconducts.
Passing standard
Minimum marks required to pass a subject is 40%. Those who get 60% or above in a subject evaluated as mentioned earlier can add the score he/she receives in the additional 20% meant for extra reading, to enhance his/her CGPA. There are bonus marks for co-curricular activities which can be used before convocation. Similarly there are marks for good conduct. All these are to encourage knowledge based action / execution leadership to emerge.
ECGPA
Co-curriculars are also graded and have credits leading to an ECGPA - Extra curricular CGPA. It measures action orientation. The following characteristics are evaluated by observing the participation level and performance of students in activities and processes; leadership & execution orientation, team orientation, co-operation & collaboration, dynamism & conviction, sense of purpose, self discipline, ownership & involvement, consistency in learning & development and seeking help & giving help. A 360 degree appraisal involving self, staff, faculty, director and student team leaders are involved in this evaluation.
Quality of work, attitude, habits, behaviour and character are constantly monitored. Grudging, whining, categorizing people, passing judgements, excusing, accusing, impulsiveness etc. are not allowed. Indiscipline invites negative marks / points. At SCMLD one's authenticity and integrity are also measured and indexed.
The Scholastics Inquisitive Index denote utilisation of library resources by the student and creating the portfolio and thesis.
Porfolio & Thesis is the physical demonstration of the intensity of interest, search for knowledge, enthusiasm in learning and depth of understanding of concepts.
CGPA - A : Indicates knowledge assessed by the faculty teaching the subject through fortnightly tests, assignments, presentations and end term exams etc.
CGPA - B : Indicates conceptual depth assessed by the faculty teaching the subject through group discussion, viva-voce and extempore team presentation.
PEI : Applied insights evaluated by practicing processionals not teaching the subject, through GD, viva-voce / team presentation etc.
Authenticity / Integrity Index (From unsupervised informal behaviour) : Denotes punctuality, quality consciousness, purposeful time utilization, adaptability to institutional ethos, camaraderie, sharing of work w.r.t. hostel cleaning, sanitation & hygiene, behaviour in library, peer relations and honesty in examinations & assignments, proactiveness, sincerity, delivery on time etc.
