Evaluation of students’ progress is a continuous process. The Two year PGDM is a 150-160 credit program. The unique co-curricular activities, the trimester end viva-voce and the social & community work are also included in the credit program.
A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system is applied to finally grade the students.
Continuous assessment - Academics
The evaluation system is a dynamic one. It is designed to make one aware as to where one stands in terms of one’s understanding in a subject / topic. A one credit subject will have 8 sessions of 1½ hours each. Two credit subject will have 16 and a three credit subject will have 24 such sessions.
One credit subject carries 50 marks. Two and three credit subjects carry 100 and 150 marks respectively.
15% of the marks are for viva-voce by the faculty teaching the subject. 30% marks will be through continuous evaluation by way of quizzes and tests during the sessions. 40% marks will be for tutorials / case study analysis / problem solving / situation analysis / assignments / essays as appropriate at the end of the course. Last 15% will be for a viva-voce, for applied insights, by practicing professionals not teaching the subject but within the scope of the syllabus. Additionally there will be an essay type exam which will evaluate the extra reading / learning efforts of students. This test will be on prescribed readings - journals, current affairs, periodicals, etc. - related to that subject. This score can be added to the total scores earned by the student in all the preceding tests and viva voce on the subject provided he/she has scored 60% or above in total in that subject. This is a bonus to improve the GPA / CGPA of the student who works hard and earn 60% and above. If a student fails in a subject, re-examination will be for the 40% end term element - tutorials / case study analysis / problem solving / situation analysis / assignments / essays, as appropriate. This is to make the students alert, attentive and active in learning day to day. This is also to emphasize that work / efforts should not be postponed. ’Here and now’ approach is very important to avoid stress and to be competitive. The habit of doing right and excellently well first time itself, needs to be promoted.
Self evaluation
The evaluation system within the above frame work is implemented as follows:
For one credit subject every fourth session will have a test of 15% marks, in the class. Immediately after the test, the teacher and the class together discuss the questions and a benchmark answer will appear on the board. This acts as instant feedback to each student as to where he / she stands. This process is repeated during the 8th session as well. With this the 30% will be over.
For the next 40%, test is conducted immediately on completion of the course. Here too, after the exam, the case / topic will be discussed in the class. This is followed / preceded by faculty and practitioners viva-voce.
The student is responsible for learning and the institution is responsible for facilitating the learning. There is no time to waste by either.
Passing standard
Minimum marks required to pass a subject is 60%. Those who get 60% or above in a subject evaluated as mentioned earlier can only add the score he/she has received in the additional 20% meant for extra reading, to enhance his/her CGPA.
ECGPA
Co-curriculars are also graded and have credits leading to an ECGPA - Extra curricular CGPA. The following characteristics are evaluated by observing the participation level and performance of students in activities and processes; leadership & execution orientation, team orientation, co-operation & collaboration, dedication & commitment, integrity & genuineness, dynamism & conviction, sense of purpose, self discipline, ownership & involvement, consistency in learning & development and seeking help & giving help. A 360 degree appraisal involving self, staff, faculty, director and student team leaders, is employed for SCMLD.
Quality of work, attitude, habits, behaviour and character are constantly monitored. Grudging, whining, categorizing people, passing judgements, excusing, accusing, impulsiveness etc. are not allowed. Indiscipline invites negative marks / points.
Conversion of marks into grade points for individual subjects
A maximum grade point (GP) of 5 is awarded to the topper, subject to his/her scoring ³ 80% in the subject. Others are then awarded grade points in proportion to the topper’s GP. If the topper scores less than 80%, he/she will be given a grade point proportionate to 80=5 basis and others are awarded grade points in proportion to the topper’s grade points. Those who fail in the first attempt (< 60% marks in the subject) are allowed two more chances to re-appear. However the topper in the first re-exam is awarded only a GP of 4.5 if the score is ³80% and 4.0 if the score is < 80%. Proportionate to 80 = 4.5 basis others are awarded grade points in proportion to the grade points of the topper of the re-exam. For the second and final chance (to be held after convocation) the GP awarded is only 3 irrespective of the score ³60%. Those who score less than 60% will remain permanently disqualified for PGDM. At any time if a student gets less than 60% in any subject, the GPA for that subject will be taken as zero. This can bring down the CGPA although in some subjects one might have scored very well. Their CGPA can get pulled down by this penalty clause. This is to make the students put their best efforts and 100% everyday, to succeed.
Calculation of CGPA
The CGPA for a student in a trimester is the weighted average of the grade points and the respective credits of all subjects in the trimester. The final CGPA of the student is the weighted average of the CGPAs of all the six trimesters and the respective credits of all trimesters of the two year programme.
Criteria for securing the diploma
Final CGPA of 3 or above out of 5 and no Es. E means failure in the subject.
Therefore it is cautioned that one must strive hard to clear the tests and exams in the first attempt itself. The trimester and the final CGPA are graded for certification as follows :
4.501- 5.000 A
4.001- 4.500 B
3.501- 4.000 C
3.000- 3.500 D
0.000- 2.999 E
Re-examinations
Re-exams will be only for the 40% end term elements. Actually re-exams questions will be set for 100% marks and all re-examinees are to take re-exams for 100 marks. For computation the score will be brought down to be out of 40%. Re-exams will be held during the subsequent trimester without any cancellation of classes or providing any study leave. That is, as the subsequent trimester is on, re-exam for the previous trimester will be held between the class sessions on a day- to-day basis. Students with Es in any subject in a trimester will be given two more chances only to improve - one during the next trimester and another after convocation of their batch in April. Irrespective of these, re-exams will be held continuously within 10 days after convocation which will be the last chance. Students who fail to clear the exams within the three attempts shall lose their diploma. However they can get a ”course attendance” certificate.
Re-exam fee
Students with 90% and above attendance need not pay any re-exam fee. Others will have to pay for all re-exams whether it is first or second chance. For the 15% faculty viva, and the 30% continuous tests, the practitioners viva for 15% and for the extra reading tests, there shall be no re-exams. Whatever they scored will be carried forward.
Marks for attendance
There will be +ve marks for attendance above 90% and -ve marks for attendance less than 90% @ +1 for percentage increase and -1 for percentage decrease, base being 90.
Bonus marks for attendance
The positive extra marks for attendance above 90% can be utilised as follows. A maximum of 2 marks can be added to a subject provided the total score in that subject is not less than 29 for a one credit course, 59 for 2 credit course and 89 for a 3 credit course respectively.
Penalty for attendance less than 90%
Those who have less than 90% attendance at any time in academics or in any co-curriculars, will lose 0.1 CGPA for every 1% less attendance. E.g.: 0.1 from CGPA scored will be lost from academics for every 1% deficiency in attendance in academics and 0.1 from ECGPA scored will be lost for every 1% deficiency in attendance in co-curriculars - Yoga, Workout, Meditation etc. Naturally they have to take re-exams even for passed subjects / co-curriculars. The negative marks for attendance less than 90% will be subtracted from any or all of the subjects in which the student has/have just passed / passed, at the discretion of the director. This penalty will precede the CGPA and ECGPA penalties each of 0.1 reduction per 1% deficiency in attendance. |
